SAN DIEGO, Calif. and AMARILLO, Texas (July 7, 2014): EDF Renewable Energy announced today that the 161-megawatt (MW) Spinning Spur II Wind Project in Texas has reached commercial operation (COD). The company further announced the close of structured equity financing from GE Energy Financial Services (NYSE: GE) and MUFG Union Bank, N.A. The completion of construction and COD milestone allows the closing of the sale of 50 percent of EDF Renewable Energy's equity interest in the project toUBS International Infrastructure Fund. Financial details were not disclosed.
Spinning Spur II commenced construction of 87 GE 1.85-megawatt, 87-meter rotor wind turbines 40 miles west of Amarillo in June 2013. The power is sold pursuant to an 11-year purchase agreement. The project is one of the first to feed into the new CREZ (Competitive Renewable Energy Zones) transmission infrastructure which enables access to the strong renewable resources of West Texas and the Texas Panhandle and delivery of the wind energy resource to the high electricity demand areas in the state. Texas leads the country in installed wind capacity with 12,300 megawatts, enough clean electricity to power 3.3 million average homes in the United States.1

With the Spinning Spur II project in operation, the Group's installed capacity since entering the Texas market in 2012 reaches 472 MW with another 700 MW in late-stage development.
Spinning Spur II is UBS International Infrastructure Fund's sixth investment and its second renewables acquisition. Spinning Spur II will generate enough electricity to power approximately 44,000 homes -- according to US Energy Environmental Protection Agency methodology -- avoiding approximately 332,000 metric tons of greenhouse gas emissions per year, the equivalent of the annual emissions from approximately 70,000 passenger vehicles.
EDF Renewable Services will provide long-term operations and maintenance for the facility, balance of plant, project oversight, and 24/7 remote monitoring from its NERC compliant Operations Control Center (OCC). The OCC provides an efficient, reliable, and secure operating platform, while benefiting from the centralization of SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition) functions and consolidation of multiple vendor SCADA environments to provide a common operating view. Breakthroughs in silicon solar cells and ultra-efficient supercomputers honored

A growth system that can produce thin solar cells quickly and at low cost, and an ultra-efficient supercomputer platform – both developed or advanced by the Energy Department's National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) and its partners – have been named among this year's most significant innovations by R&D Magazine.

"Investments in energy research and development not only create jobs in America but help advance the goal of a clean energy future."
"These awards recognize the tremendous value of our National Labs," said Secretary of Energy Ernest Moniz. "Research and development at the National Labs continues to help our nation address its energy challenges and pursue the scientific and technological innovations necessary to remain globally competitive."
The two prestigious awards, known in the research and development community as "the Oscars of Innovation," bring to 57 the number of R&D 100 awards that NREL has won since 1982.
Innovative Growth System Lowers Cost of Monocrystalline Silicon Wafers
NREL worked with the company Crystal Solar to demonstrate the viability of high-efficiency thin monocrystalline silicon (Si) solar cells and modules that are less than 80 microns thick and to show that they can be grown at low-cost through an epitaxial process.
The Direct Monocrystalline Silicon Wafer Growth by High-Throughput Epitaxy Team also showed that the process can grow cells in large quantity at a cost of about 50 cents a watt – an important threshold toward America's goal of cleaner energy future. The growth system produces cells at half the cost and 100 times the speed of conventional epitaxial reactors, opening the door to rapid commercialization.
NREL performed characterization and reliability measurements on cells fabricated by Crystal Solar and collaborated with the company's technical team to develop and implement modifications to the measured cells, contributing to improved cell performance and reliability.
Leading the Crystal Solar team was T.S. Ravi, V. Siva and J. Vatus. NREL's team included Harin Ullal, Bhushan Sopori and Steve Johnson.
High Performance Supercomputing Platform Uses Warm Water to Prevent Heat Build-up
NREL's other R&D 100 award, in collaboration with HP, was for the HP Apollo 8000 System. This innovative system uses component-level warm-water cooling to dissipate heat generated by the supercomputer, thus eliminating the need for expensive and inefficient chillers in the data center. The energy-saving approach based on warm-water cooling is a key reason that the building in which the supercomputer sits, NREL's Energy Systems Integration Facility, was awarded LEED Platinum designation and named 2014 Laboratory of the Year by R&D 100 Magazine.
In addition, the innovative design allows waste heat from the computer to be captured and used to heat office and laboratory space, achieving even higher efficiency levels. High performance computers (HPC) provide the foundation for numerical modeling and simulations, which permit scientists to gain new insights and drive innovations in energy efficiency and renewable energy technologies. However, as HPC systems scale by orders of magnitude, energy use and cooling these systems becomes more challenging, begging a solution, such as the one provided by HP and NREL.

"Oscars" of Innovation
Winners of the R&D 100 Awards are selected by an independent judging panel and the editors of R&D Magazine. Since 1963, the R&D 100 Awards have identified revolutionary technologies newly introduced to the market. Many of these have become household names, helping shape everyday life for many Americans. The awards are considered to be the "Oscars" of Innovation.

SSE Renewables Selects GE Turbines for Scottish Wind Farm in the Highlands

SCHENECTADY, N.Y.---July 8, 2014---Further advancing the growth of renewable energy throughout the United Kingdom, GE (NYSE: GE) today announced that it will supply SSE Renewables with 33 GE 2.85-100 wind turbines for the Dunmaglass Wind Farm, located near Inverness, Scotland. GE specially designed these wind turbines for the project with a 70-meter tower so they meet the associated planning conditions that require a maximum tip height of 120 meters.

The 33 wind turbines on the Dunmaglass Wind Farm will result in an installed capacity of 94 megawatts (MW), which will contribute to Scotland meeting its renewable energy targets.



SSE Renewables Selects GE Turbines for Scottish Wind Farm in the Highlands

E.ON And GE Energy Financial Services Partner To Complete GE-Powered Wind Farm, In Texas Panhandle

AMARILLO, TEXAS -- July 8, 2014: Subsidiaries of E.ON SE (E.ON) and GE (NYSE: GE) are forming an investment partnership to own and operate Grandview Phase I, a 211-megawattt GE-powered wind farm under construction in the Texas Panhandle. GE Energy Financial Services provided 50 percent of the partnership equity in the project, with the balance provided by E.ON's subsidiary E.ON Climate and Renewables North America, LLC (EC&RNA). Financial details were not disclosed.
Located 26 miles east of Amarillo in Carson County, Grandview I will use 118 GE 1.7-100 wind turbines, which GE will service under a five-year agreement. EC&RNA is managing construction of the wind farm, expected to begin commercial operations in December. Once complete, EC&RNA will provide operations and maintenance.
