Polk Study: Over Time, Allure of Hybrid Ownership Wanes
By NICK BUNKLEY
DETROIT - People who own a hybrid car are unlikely to get another one the next time they buy a new vehicle, according to a study released Monday by the consulting firm R.L. Polk.
Nearly two thirds of hybrid owners -- 65 percent -- who bought a new car last year chose a gasoline-powered model instead, Polk found by analyzing registration data for 75,000 vehicles. Excluding the top-selling model, the Toyota Prius, fewer than one quarter of hybrid owners bought a new hybrid.
Although the study did not reveal why hybrid owners soured on the technology, analysts said the cars' higher price tags played a pronounced role. Meanwhile, automakers have greatly improved the fuel efficiency of gas engines, narrowing the gap between hybrids and traditional models.
