Honeywell Launches Third-Generation Film To Protect Solar Panels 
 
PowerShield® 3W is more durable than competitive films, allowing solar panels to reliably supply power even in the harshest environments
MORRIS TOWNSHIP, N.J., May 16, 2012 – Honeywell (NYSE: HON) announced today that it has introduced its third-generation laminate film designed to protect solar power panels from harsh environments while helping them maintain power output over their 25-year lifespans.

The product, PowerShield® 3W, is a cost-effective backsheet for photovoltaic panels that helps protect the electrical circuits in solar panel modules, preventing moisture from entering the module and keeping electrical charges within the module. These features help the module retain maximum power output while maintaining electrical safety.

PowerShield 3W is a laminate that is bound by a proprietary adhesive specifically designed for photovoltaic applications. The adhesive helps make the laminate the most durable backsheet available from Honeywell to date.

Honeywell’s latest innovative backsheet, PowerShield 3W, provides solar panel manufacturers with cost-effective and reliable protection for their modules,” said Jerry Buchanan, global business manager for Honeywell’s photovoltaic backing systems business. “This backsheet has been proven to perform in some of the most rigorous conditions.”

PowerShield 3W is available now, and leading module manufacturers are already including it in module designs.

Independent photovoltaic-industry laboratory tests show that PowerShield 3W can withstand more than 3,000 hours of accelerating aging exposure at 85°C (185°F) and 85 percent relative humidity without losing structural integrity.

The backsheet’s superior adhesive offers excellent resistance to discoloration due to aging, which helps solar modules retain their appearance and reflectivity. Like all PowerShield backsheets, PowerShield 3W offers high resistance to environmental degradation from sunlight, heat, cold and humidity; strong resistance to acids, bases, solvents, salts and other chemicals; and resistance to excessive moisture infiltration within a module.

The technology behind PowerShield 3W is based on Honeywell’s more than 30 years of experience as the world’s leading manufacturer of high-barrier films for food packaging, industrial and healthcare applications, including packaging that protects drugs sold by the world’s leading pharmaceutical companies.

Honeywell Green Diesel™ To Be Produced From Bio Feedstocks In U.S. Facility 

Louisiana facility will use UOP/Eni Ecofining™ process technology to produce 85 million
gallons of Honeywell Green Diesel per year 

DES PLAINES, Ill., May 8, 2012 -- UOP LLC, a Honeywell (NYSE: HON) company, announced today that it has signed an agreement to license technology to Emerald Biofuels LLC to produce Honeywell Green Diesel™ at a facility in Louisiana. 

Emerald is expected to use Honeywell’s UOP/Eni Ecofining™ process technology to produce 85 million gallons per year of Honeywell Green Diesel from non-edible, second-generation oils and animal fats. Unlike biodiesel, Honeywell Green Diesel is a drop-in replacement for traditional diesel. Chemically identical to petroleum-based diesel, Honeywell Green Diesel can be used in any proportion in existing fuel tanks without infrastructure changes.

Emerald is an Illinois-based transportation fuel company that focuses on building renewable diesel refineries that produce environmentally friendly transportation fuels at prices competitive to petroleum-based fuels. International Alliance Group (IAG) will provide engineering, procurement and construction services for the project.

“We are very pleased to work with Emerald in its efforts to advance the production of biofuels through this breakthrough project in the U.S.,” said Jim Rekoske, vice president and general manager of Honeywell’s UOP Renewable Energy and Chemicals business unit. “We are proud to offer a technology solution that supports diesel production, while lessening the environmental impact of fuel production through the use of alternative feedstocks and the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions.”

Honeywell’s UOP and Eni SpA jointly developed the UOP/Eni Ecofining process, which uses hydroprocessing technology to convert non-edible natural oils and animal fats to Honeywell Green Diesel. The fuel offers improved performance over biodiesel and petroleum-based diesel, including a high cetane value of 80 compared with a cetane range of 40 to 60 found in diesel at the pump today. Cetane value is the measure of the combustion quality of diesel. Higher cetane values help diesel engines operate more effectively.

Honeywell Green Diesel offers high energy density, excellent performance at cold or warm temperatures, and features up to an 80 percent lifecycle reduction in greenhouse gas emissions compared with diesel from petroleum. Honeywell Green Diesel offers value as a blending stock for refiners seeking to enhance existing diesel and to expand the diesel pool.
Honeywell’s UOP, the recognized leader in developing process technology for the refining, petrochemical, and gas processing and hydrogen industries, offers technologies to convert natural oils and plant biomass into valuable fuels.

In addition to the UOP/Eni Ecofining technology, since launching its renewable energy and chemicals business in 2007, the company commercialized the UOP Renewable Jet Fuel Process under a contract with the U.S. Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) to produce Honeywell Green Jet Fuel™ for the U.S. military. It produces an aviation biofuel that can be blended seamlessly with petroleum-based fuel.

In 2008, Honeywell’s UOP partnered with Ensyn Corp. to form a joint venture, Envergent Technologies LLC, to offer RTP® rapid thermal processing technology and equipment for the production of renewable heat, power and transportation fuels. RTP technology is currently in use in seven commercial biomass processing plants in the U.S. and Canada.

Honeywell Opens New Interactive Technology Experience Center In China 

Visitors to Learn How Honeywell's Technologies Are Helping to Solve Some of The World’s Biggest Challenges such as Energy Efficiency, Energy Generation, Safety and Security 
SHANGHAI, May 8, 2012 – Honeywell (NYSE: HON) today opened its largest technology experience center, an immersive experience for customers and visitors to interact with technologies that make communities in China safer and more secure, more comfortable and energy efficient, more innovative and productive. Located in Honeywell's Asia Pacific headquarters at Zhangjiang Hi-Tech Park in Shanghai, the Honeywell Technology Experience underscores the company's commitment to China, its fastest growing market. Honeywell’s total sales revenue in China reached approximately U.S. $1.9 billion in 2011, or a 20% growth over 2010.

The Honeywell Technology Experience features a flight simulator, an interactive cityscape, and a modern home equipped with smart home technologies. Visitors can take the controls of a modern jet and perform a virtual take-off, hold a 3-D turbocharger, watch how an industrial control room manages an emergency, enter a modern home to see Honeywell controls that manage everything from lighting and water systems, to intrusion detection and temperature. A “barrel of oil” exhibit demonstrates how to squeeze more high value products from crude oil and how to produce green energy using Honeywell’s refining technologies.

The Center is divided into six neighborhoods: transportation; industry; commercial; home; energy, and a community area where visitors can see how Honeywell is connecting directly with its local hometowns, through its science and math education; housing and shelter; family safety and security; habitat and conservation; and humanitarian relief efforts as part of its Honeywell Hometown Solutions corporate social responsibilities.
