GE Successfully Proves Technology to Extend Wind Turbine Blades

LAS VEGAS---May 6, 2014---Today, GE's (NYSE: GE) renewable energy business announced a technology demonstration of a 7-meter blade extension, taking GE wind turbines from a 77-meter rotor to a 91-meter rotor. The extension increases the swept area of the rotor by 40 percent and increases the energy production by more than 20 percent. There are currently two prototypes that have been in operation for 10 months, which were completed with Noble Environmental Power at Noble's Clinton Wind Park in Clinton, New York.

The technology upgrades GE 1.5-77 turbines to GE 1.5-91 turbines utilizing the entire existing blade asset. The program was developed by GE to help customers achieve significant increase in power output on their existing fleet while maintaining existing product life and acoustics. Throughout the development of the extensions, the GE team filed more than 16 patent applications and developed custom tooling for the extension installation.

Achieving production gains of more than 20 percent for existing units is a challenging task, and with GE's expertise in engineering aerodynamics, material science, structural engineering and controls, we continue to be able to help our customers operate more profitably and efficiently."

Advanced technologies developed to make the project a reality include the unique, centrally located insert, improved methodologies and advanced controls for loads mitigation. The extended blades have undergone testing beyond IEC requirements, including static strength tests that are standard for all GE-engineered blades and fatigue tests totaling more than 6 million cycles. The model and process utilize the existing design margins of the 1.5-77 turbine in lower wind speed applications. In addition to the extended blades, modifications were made to controls and parts to adjust for the added loads on the turbine.

The blade extension technology demonstration is an example of GE's investment in advancing the industry. LAS VEGAS---May 6, 2014---Today, GE's (NYSE: GE) renewable energy business announced the expansion of its brilliant wind platform to include plant-level wind management software applications to improve overall wind farm output. Using the power of the Industrial Internet and turbine-to-turbine communications capabilities, GE's new software allows the turbines within a wind farm to act as a cohesive unit, rather than individual assets. Wind plant wake management, from GE Predictivity™, is the first farm-level management application launched by GE and enables customers to recapture lost power output from waking effects.

When capturing wind, turbines create a wake that impacts the volume and condition of the wind reaching turbines sited behind. With the wind farm wake management application, turbines balance performance and loads throughout the entire wind farm. In turn, wind farms can achieve greater power output as an overall plant, and customers can expect to see 5-10 percent reduced wake losses and improved mechanical loads due to lower wake turbulence. This translates to up to 8 percent more profit for the wind plant.

"In the past, wind plants have operated as a series of single autonomous units. With wind plant management, turbines can operate as part of an interconnected, cohesive team, as opposed to competing with one another for the best wind," said Anne McEntee, president and CEO of GE's renewable energy business. "Now, what used to be a series of 1-2 megawatt machines can operate more efficiently as a full-scale multi-megawatt power plant."

GE's wind plant management applications will be optional features on new projects. For the existing GE fleet, in the future the technology will be integrated into GE's Wind PowerUp* technology platform.

Developed in collaboration with GE's global research and development centers, new applications will continue to be introduced by GE. Wind farm wake management is a part of GE's brilliant wind platform, which harnesses the power of the Industrial Internet to analyze tens of thousands of data points on a wind farm every second, driving higher output, increasing services productivity and creating new revenue streams for customers. It also is one of GE's Predictivity technologies, using connectivity and advanced analytics.

LAS VEGAS---May 6, 2014---Today, GE's (NYSE: GE) renewable energy business announced a cumulative 3.9 gigawatts (GW) of firm and unconditional wind turbine supply orders in the United States since January 1, 2013, the date of the Production Tax Credit extension. Of these orders, 1.1 GW of GE technology was placed into service in 2013. The remaining 2.8 GW will be commissioned or begin construction by the end of 2015.

In May 2013, GE announced it had 1 GW of orders in the U.S. since the January 1, 2013, PTC extension ruling. Today, GE announces that since January 1, 2013, the number of orders contracted has increased to 3.9 GW. GE has expanded its customer base to include developers such as Sumitomo and Starwood Energy, which both will be installing 200-megawatt (MW) projects using GE's 1.7-100 wind turbines. Mesquite Creek Wind, jointly developed by Sumitomo and BNB Renewable Energy, is based near Lamesa, Texas, and Starwood Energy's Stephen Ranch wind farm is located in Borden and Lynn counties, Texas. The 1.7-100 was introduced in 2013 and is part of the GE's brilliant platform.

Today, GE also announced the expansion of its brilliant wind platform to include the 2.2-107 wind turbine and wind plant wake management software technology. The 2.2-107 provides a 12 percent increase in capacity factor and a 33 percent increase in power output and is well suited for Brazil's Class II wind regime. Wind plant wake management software improves output at the plant level through turbine-to-turbine communication, harmonizing wind farms of more than 20 turbines to achieve greater output as a single, efficient plant. With the initial applications, customers can expect to see 5 to 10 percent reduced wake loss and improved mechanical loads due to lower wake turbulence.

GE's Distributed Power Teams with Clarke Energy to Help Biffa Modernize UK Landfill Gas-to-Energy Plants

MUNICH---May 6, 2014---GE Power & Water's Distributed Power business (NYSE: GE) today announced Clarke Energy, GE's authorized Jenbacher gas engine distributor for the United Kingdom, has been selected to supply U.K. waste management company Biffa with eight of GE's Jenbacher landfill gas engines as part of a modernization of several landfill gas-to-energy (LFGE) plants across the U.K.
Today's announcement was made during IFAT Entsorga 2014, the world's leading trade show for water, sewage, waste and raw materials management, taking place May 5-9, 2014, in Munich. Biffa is a leading U.K. integrated waste management business, providing collection, treatment, recycling and technologically-driven energy generation services.
For the project, Clarke Energy will supply Biffa with eight of GE's containerized, 1-megawatt (MW) JGC320GS-LL gas engines. Biffa plans to replace some of its older LFGE generators that have reached the end of their operating life cycles with GE's more efficient, ecomagination qualified Jenbacher units. The GE engines will generate a combined 8.5 MW of renewable electricity, which is enough to power 20,000 average homes.
GE's fuel-flexible Jenbacher gas engines are powered by landfill gas, which is created from solid waste decomposition and then recovered as a valuable renewable fuel. This methane-rich gas would otherwise be wasted by being released into the atmosphere as a potent greenhouse gas. Methane has a global warming factor that is 21 times greater than carbon dioxide (CO2).
Biffa Managing Director Dr. John Casey said, "Clarke Energy has been providing installation and equipment services to Biffa since 1997. Their service has been second to none, hence we had no hesitation in approaching them to supply our new (Jenbacher) landfill gas generators to support our business needs moving forward. We look forward to continuing our relationship with Clarke Energy and their support for our plans for growth in this area."
Alan Fletcher, the main board director at Clarke Energy, said, "We are delighted to be working with GE to support Biffa in the renewal of their landfill gas generating assets. The new LFGE units, which will be manufactured at GE's Jenbacher gas engine factory in Jenbach, Austria, are expected to be delivered in October 2014.

GE and Clarke Energy have a long-standing relationship with Biffa, supplying landfill gas power generation equipment and providing critical after-sales product support through Clarke Energy. The latest order for the eight units brings the total number of Jenbacher gas engines supplied to Biffa to 91 generators that produce a total of 73.4 MW of renewable electricity. Clarke Energy has now supplied more than 680 MW of landfill gas-based generation capacity across the U.K. and Ireland alone.
