CanWEA Awards GE for Work on Pan-Canadian Wind Integration Study

From GE:

  • Study Finds Canada Can Integrate Large Amounts of Wind Energy Reliably and Cost-Effectively
  • GE’s Energy Consulting Group Recognized at Annual CanWEA Awards Dinner

Gatineau, QC, Canada — April 6, 2017 — Recognized as a leader in its field, GE’s Energy Consulting business (NYSE: GE) has been awarded the 2017 R.J. Templin Award from the Canadian Wind Energy Association (CanWEA) for its work on the Pan-Canadian Wind Integration Study (PCWIS). CanWEA — Canada’s leading source of information on wind energy’s social, economic, health and environmental benefits for Canadian communities and provincial economies — presented the award to GE at the annual CanWEA Awards Dinner in Gatineau, Quebec.

The R.J. Templin Award, first awarded in 1985, recognizes an individual or organization that has undertaken scientific, technical, engineering or policy research and development work that has produced results that have served to significantly advance the wind energy industry in Canada.

“Anyone who has had a chance to take a close look at the Pan-Canadian Wind Integration Study knows, first, what a monumental undertaking it was, and second, how important its findings are to the continued growth of wind energy in Canada,” said Robert Hornung, CanWEA President. “GE Energy Consulting was a critical part of its success, leading a team of expert, specialized firms to produce a comprehensive analysis that will be a valuable source of data and information for our industry for years to come.”

The study considered four scenarios in which wind energy supplied between 5 percent and 35 percent of the forecast system load. Based on the scenarios, GE determined that more than one-third of Canada’s electricity could be generated from wind energy without compromising grid reliability. It also would be able to reduce emissions and generate new export opportunities if it were to integrate more wind power into its energy mix.

“Canada is equipped with vast, high-quality wind resources from coast to coast, yet, only about 5 percent of the country’s energy mix comes from wind generation,” said Bahman Daryanian, technical director, GE’s Energy Consulting business. “The PCWIS helps pave the way for Canadian utilities to make the most of their wind resources for future power generation by outlining scenarios at various levels of renewable penetrations. This insight will help ensure that future integration of wind generation into the power mix is optimized for efficiency and reliability. This prestigious recognition from CanWEA demonstrates how valuable this information will be as Canada looks to modernize its electrical grid in the years to come.”

The full PCWIS study, conducted by GE’s Energy Consulting business, was released July 6, 2016, by CanWEA. GE team members, Bahman Daryanian and Gene Hinkle were on-site to receive the award from CanWEA.

GE’s project partners included Electranix, EnerNex, Knight Piésold, and Vaisala, who made valuable contributions to the study.

Paris, April 4th 2017 – GE Renewable Energy announces that the first nacelle (out of 66) that will be part of the Merkur Offshore windfarm has recently left the assembly line. According to planning, this nacelle will be stored at GE’s Saint-Nazaire (France) site while new ones continue to be manufactured, and then be shipped to our logistical operations hub in Eemshaven (Netherlands) where the installation process will start in spring 2018.
“Merkur is a very important project and a strategic windfarm for us because it allows us to continue our export ramp-up activity in Saint-Nazaire while we keep on moving into new strategic projects. Just last week we announced our first China offshore deal that will make GE the only supplier to have installed offshore wind turbines in the Americas, Europe and Asia”, said John Lavelle, CEO of GE’s Offshore Wind business.
Merkur windfarm is located approximately 35km north of the island of Borkum, Germany, in the North Sea, and consist of 66 turbines that will generate approximately 1,750 GWh annually, enough clean energy to power around 500,000 homes. When completed (end 2018), Merkur will be one of Germany's largest offshore wind farms.

GE provides Energy Monitoring System for smart energy operation at the Olympic Winter Games PyeongChang 2018

From GE:

  Share41

  • To be installed at the Main Operations Center of the Organizing Committee for the Olympic Winter Games PyeongChang 2018 (POCOG)
  • Expected to enhance stability and reliability of power supply at 14 Olympic Games venues through real-time energy monitoring system
  • Data to help establish economic energy operational plans for the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 and the Olympic Winter Games Beijing 2022
Seoul, March 23, 2017 – GE, a Worldwide Partner of the Olympic Games, announced today that it will provide the Olympic Winter Games PyeongChang 2018 with an Energy Monitoring System (EMS) for the first time in the 122 years history of the Olympic Games.
GE Digital, the provider of the world’s first Industrial Internet platform Predix, will build a system based on its CIMPLICITY HMI/SCADA and Historian data collection solutions to monitor and analyze the power supply and consumption of 14 venues on a real-time basis. GE is expected to support the first ‘Smart Energy’ Olympic Games by providing a solution to monitor more reliable energy and efficient operation of the Games.
The EMS offers real-time visibility of energy management and enables prompt diagnosis for quick problem solving in the case of power failures that may occur anywhere between the Olympic Games Stadiums and live-broadcasting, where reliable energy is crucial. The Main Operations Center of POCOG is expected to enhance its capability as a control tower utilizing the EMS with eyes on energy operation every second. As the operators  remotely monitor energy from the Main Operations Center, the response speed to the power failures is expected to be significantly enhanced.
Additionally, the system will record energy data generated as well as Uninterruptible Power Supplies (UPS) connected to the Olympic Games Stadiums. The GE Digital system which measures power consumption throughout the Olympic Games, starting from this Olympic Winter Games PyeongChang 2018 for the first time, will collect precise power consumptions of each stadium and provide integrated analysis. The relevant data is being discussed as a “digital legacy” for the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 and the Olympic Winter Games Beijing 2022 in order to save cost by making more efficient facility investment.
Willy Cho, Commercial Vice President of GE Digital Korea, said: “The EMS will bring about great convenience in the energy operation at the Olympic Winter Games in PyeongChang, given that utilizing data will help set up more economical power plans for the next Olympic Games. This Olympic Winter Games PyeongChang 2018 will be a global best practice that demonstrates strategic energy operation management of a sporting event.”
GE Digital plans to complete the installation of the EMS by October. It will be commissioned from November to the end of the year during the test events, and fully operate in February 2018.  GE Digital will assist in a full range of scope from designing data collection procedures and management interface to on-site staff support.
