CanWEA Awards GE for Work on Pan-Canadian Wind Integration Study

Gatineau, QC, Canada — April 6, 2017 — Recognized as a leader in its field, GE’s Energy Consulting business (NYSE: GE) has been awarded the 2017 R.J. Templin Award from the Canadian Wind Energy Association (CanWEA) for its work on the Pan-Canadian Wind Integration Study (PCWIS). CanWEA — Canada’s leading source of information on wind energy’s social, economic, health and environmental benefits for Canadian communities and provincial economies — presented the award to GE at the annual CanWEA Awards Dinner in Gatineau, Quebec.

The R.J. Templin Award, first awarded in 1985, recognizes an individual or organization that has undertaken scientific, technical, engineering or policy research and development work that has produced results that have served to significantly advance the wind energy industry in Canada.

“Anyone who has had a chance to take a close look at the Pan-Canadian Wind Integration Study knows, first, what a monumental undertaking it was, and second, how important its findings are to the continued growth of wind energy in Canada,” said Robert Hornung, CanWEA President. “GE Energy Consulting was a critical part of its success, leading a team of expert, specialized firms to produce a comprehensive analysis that will be a valuable source of data and information for our industry for years to come.”

The study considered four scenarios in which wind energy supplied between 5 percent and 35 percent of the forecast system load. Based on the scenarios, GE determined that more than one-third of Canada’s electricity could be generated from wind energy without compromising grid reliability. It also would be able to reduce emissions and generate new export opportunities if it were to integrate more wind power into its energy mix.

“Canada is equipped with vast, high-quality wind resources from coast to coast, yet, only about 5 percent of the country’s energy mix comes from wind generation,” said Bahman Daryanian, technical director, GE’s Energy Consulting business. “The PCWIS helps pave the way for Canadian utilities to make the most of their wind resources for future power generation by outlining scenarios at various levels of renewable penetrations. This insight will help ensure that future integration of wind generation into the power mix is optimized for efficiency and reliability. This prestigious recognition from CanWEA demonstrates how valuable this information will be as Canada looks to modernize its electrical grid in the years to come.” 

The full PCWIS study, conducted by GE’s Energy Consulting business, was released July 6, 2016, by CanWEA. GE team members, Bahman Daryanian and Gene Hinkle were on-site to receive the award from CanWEA.

GE’s project partners included Electranix, EnerNex, Knight PiĆ©sold, and Vaisala, who made valuable contributions to the study.

GE Renewable Energy Selected by Lincoln Clean Energy and I Squared Capital for 250 MW Texas Wind Project, $330 Million in Project Financing Closed

Schenectady and New York, NY – April 3, 2017 – Lincoln Clean Energy (LCE), a portfolio company of I Squared Capital, announced today the financing of its Willow Springs project, a 250 megawatt wind farm in Haskell County, Texas. GE Renewable Energy (NYSE: GE) will supply the project with 100 of its 2.5-116 wind turbines. Upon entering commercial operations, the wind farm will be supported by a 20-year, extended full service agreement performed by GE.
The $330 million project will receive construction and term financing from Bank of America Merrill Lynch (BAML) and Rabobank as well as long-term tax equity from BAML and BHE Renewables, LLC. Power from the project is contracted under an agreement with Merrill Lynch Commodities.
Lincoln Clean Energy is also currently constructing the 253 megawatt Amazon Wind Farm Texas.

Once Willow Springs is complete, GE will have commissioned 1,363 megawatts of wind capacity across six wind farms developed by LCE over four years. GE’s 2X platform is compatible with GE’s Digital Wind Farm technology, powered by GE’s Predix software. With varying generator ratings, megawatts and various rotor diameter options, the 2X platform is well-suited for a variety of U.S. wind conditions.

Paris, March 27th 2017 – GE Renewable Energy was selected by Chinese Fuqing Haixia Electricity Generation Company (a joint venture between China Three Gorges and Fujian Energy) to deliver three HaliadeTM 150-6MW offshore wind turbines to the Fujian Xinghua Gulf demo project. The contract includes technical support and a two year operation and maintenance service.
GE Renewable Energy is one of the several wind turbine suppliers to participate in the 73MW windfarm project, capable to provide enough power to satisfy the needs of more than 20,000 households in the region.
John Lavelle, President & CEO of GE’s Offshore Wind Business, “Our state-of-the-art Haliade 150-6MW wind turbine has proven to be a very flexible product that can be customized to the local needs. When finished, GE will be the only supplier in the world to have installed offshore wind turbines in the Americas, Europe and Asia, and we are looking forward to continue a successful offshore journey in China and Asia.”
The three nacelles and generators will be manufactured at GE’s Offshore Wind facility in Saint-Nazaire (France), whereas towers and blades will be manufactured locally in China (Chengxi) and Denmark respectively.
Installation is expected to take place during the last quarter of 2017, and once finished, GE will provide a two year operation and maintenance service along with technical support.
The Fujian Xinghua Gulf demo project is a stepping stone in China’s offshore ambitions. Chinese authorities have announced additional investments in renewable energy sector, which will put the nation as the leading clean energy player in the world.

SCHENECTADY, NY—Aug. 25, 2016—GE Renewable Energy (NYSE: GE) announced it has secured five-year Digital Wind Farm services contracts for two aging wind farms in central Japan. Kinden Corporation’s 30 MW Shirama wind farm, a seven-year-old project near Osaka, expects the digital solution will increase the site’s annual energy production (AEP) by up to five percent. A second contract, signed with Kandenko, is expected to deliver up to two percent higher AEP for the 22 MW Chosi project, a twelve-year-old wind farm near Tokyo.
Anne McEntee, President & CEO of GE’s Onshore Wind business said, “Our Digital Wind Farm concept is starting to gain traction all over the world. These two projects in Japan are great examples of our lifecycle approach to services—we are using data and analytics to create new value from older machines.”
Originally commissioned in 2004, the Chosi wind farm consists of 15 units of GE’s 1.5s product. Using GE’s Prognostics and PowerUp* Services software applications, the site will implement a turbine performance enhancement strategy that involves, among other adjustments, fine tuning the pitch angle according to the site’s real-world operating conditions. The resulting data will help the team analyze current and historical performance, plus it will help predict the remaining useful life of key components in the aging machines. The Kandenko team expects the new technology to boost revenue by up to $650,000 over the remaining lifetime of the project.
Kinden Corporation’s 30 MW Shirama project near Osaka is made up of 20 units of GE’s 1.5sle wind turbines. First commissioned in 2009, the site will also receive GE’s Prognostics and PowerUp* Services applications, implementing software and hardware enhancements that utilize a new blade clearance operation mode which will help the turbines run more efficiently and increase overall plant production by up to five percent.
GE’s Digital Wind Farm concept extends to a wide variety of existing turbine models, and the apps are also compatible with the company’s new 2 MW and 3 MW wind turbines. In May, the company unveiled anew suite of Digital Wind Farm applications that were developed to enhance production and improve wind farm profitability. The programs are built on the Predix* software platform, the foundation for all GE’s Industrial Internet applications, and include its specialized cyber security protection for operational technology.
