NREL: News Feature - NREL Uses Industry Best Practices to Add Partners

The Energy Department's National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) is accelerating the availability of next-generation energy efficiency and renewable energy technologies in the marketplace by making it easier for industry partners to work with the laboratory.

Thanks to a commercialization strategy that focuses on innovation and partnering, NREL is one of the leaders in the Energy Department's national laboratory complex when it comes to transferring technologies to the market. In fact, NREL has more cooperative research and development agreements (CRADAs) than any other national laboratory (in Fiscal Year 2013, NREL boasted 166 active CRADAs and 28 new CRADAs).

ANANTHAPUR AND BETUL, INDIA -- July 28, 2014: GE unit (NYSE: GE) GE Energy Financial Services has invested equity in three Atria Power wind projects under construction in India, supporting GE's commitment to invest USD $1 billion annually in renewable energy projects worldwide. The wind farms will have a combined capacity of 126 megawatts and will support the Indian Ministry of New and Renewable Energy's program to generate competitively priced grid-interactive wind power through feed-in tariffs. Financial details were not disclosed.
Located in Ananthapur district of Andhra Pradesh, the 25.6-megawatt first project is expected to reach commercial operations in September. The two other projects, each 50 megawatts, are located in Betul district of Madhya Pradesh, and are expected to reach commercial operations in December and June 2015 respectively. Off-take arrangements for the projects have not yet been finalized.
The projects will use GE 1.6-87.5 wind turbines, serviced by GE under an operations and maintenance agreement, to generate 76 megawatts of the total capacity. Additional turbines will be supplied and serviced by another manufacturer to generate 50 megawatts. Atria Power is managing construction and operations.

GE Energy Financial Services is one of the world's biggest investors in wind power, with a portfolio of projects spanning nine countries and a capacity totaling more than 13 gigawatts in operation or under construction.
Kin Advisors was the exclusive advisor to Atria Power on this transaction. Atria Power has a 125-megawatt renewable energy portfolio, and plans for an additional 700-megwatts in wind and solar. These latest farms will help India meet its target of 20 percent energy generation from renewable sources by 2020.

EAST CLEVELAND, Ohio (July 23, 2014)---When Boston University went in search of a lighting upgrade for its Track and Tennis Center, it set its sights high---literally. Seeking to improve light levels and reduce energy as part of its ongoing energy-efficiency initiatives, the University's Building Automation Services team knew they needed a high bay LED lighting solution.
"We really did our homework and rigorously tested several lighting solutions before ultimately deciding on GE's Albeo™ LED high bay lighting fixtures," said Elijah Ercolino, the BU director of building automation services. "The benefits extended beyond the energy efficiency of the fixture---we were also fans of the modern aesthetic and exceptional durability for the application."
No More Noise Pollution, Reduced MaintenanceHome to a variety of athletic practices and events, commencement ceremonies and more, Boston University's Track and Tennis Center required a lighting solution that was as flexible as the facility itself. Over time, the 127 metal halide fixtures from the original construction in 2002 had become outdated and required increased maintenance.
"As the ballasts from the metal halide fixtures aged, they created a dramatic buzzing noise that interfered with athlete and spectator concentration," Ercolino said. "The new Albeo LED lighting fixtures are noticeably quieter and have cut down noise levels."
In addition to eliminating noise from the fixtures throughout the facility, the Albeo lighting fixtures also have a rated lifetime of 100,000 hours and provide greater foot-candle performance, helping to increase light levels while further reducing energy use and maintenance burdens on the facility.
An A+ DecisionAfter making the switch to GE's Albeo ABHX Series LED high bay lighting fixtures, the university expects to save an estimated 770,000 kilowatt-hours annually, which is a 40 percent reduction in the center's overall energy use.
Additionally, the Track and Tennis Center also enjoys an integrated, smart lighting system that incorporates wireless controls, thanks to the dimming capabilities and precise control the Albeo lighting fixtures provide. Each of the seven unique zones of the facility has its own controls where light levels and on/off timing preferences can be controlled independently of one another, creating an infinitely flexible lighting solution that greatly reduces energy usage.
"A lot of students and faculty have already begun to take notice and are commenting on the facility's lighting improvements," Ercolino added.

U.S. Slips Behind Other Nations in Energy Efficiency Ranking | Ideas Lab

The U.S. lags behind three-fourths of the world’s 16 largest economies in measures of energy efficiency, clocking in at No. 13 behind Australia, India, and South Korea, according to a new international scorecard.
Countries at the top of the list, such as No. 1 Germany, are positioned with stronger, more competitive economies that use less energy to achieve the same or better results than other nations, according to the American Council for an Energy Efficient Economy, which released the scorecard last week.
