GM Unveils Cadillac Hybrid at Detroit Auto Show

General Motors (GM) on January 15 unveiled the 2014 Cadillac ELR hybrid at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit, Michigan. The luxury car, described by the automaker as an extended-range electric vehicle, combines a battery and a gasoline-powered generator that extends the car's range. The car's technology is based on the Chevrolet Volt and is largely unchanged from the 2009 Converj concept.

The ELR's battery is a T-shaped, 16.5 kilowatt-hour lithium-ion battery pack, located along the centerline of the vehicle between the front and rear wheels. The ELR will deliver a GM-estimated range of about 35 miles of all-electric, battery-powered driving, depending on terrain, driving techniques, and temperature. Charging the ELR's battery can be done with a 120-volt (V) electrical outlet or a dedicated 240V charging station.
