National Fuel Economy Challenge

From the U.S. Department of Energy Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy:

This #TBT we go back to 1978, when the #Energy Department launched the National Fuel Economy Challenge in cooperation with the Sports Car Club of America (SCCA Inc.). Unlike a traditional road rally, the participants competed over a fixed course at posted speed limits with the goal to maximize their vehicles’ fuel economy. The judges determined the winner by comparing the gas mileage achieved on the course with the official U.S. Environmental Protection Agency(EPA) gas mileage estimate of the car. Thirty-seven years later, we’re still helping consumers save money and fuel through FuelEconomy.gov, which hosts both the EPA gas mileage of cars back to 1984 as well as gas-saving tips you can use in your car today.
