Brookhaven National Laboratory Joins Smart Grid Consumer Collaborative

Brookhaven National Laboratory is newest member of nonprofit encouraging consumer engagement for smarter electric grids

Upton, NY, Feb. 13, 2012 — The U.S. Department of Energy’s Brookhaven National Laboratory announced today its membership in the Smart Grid Consumer Collaborative (SGCC). Since its founding in March 2010,SGCC has attracted many member organizations to listen, educate and collaborate for modernized, intelligent electrical systems.
“Brookhaven Lab is extremely pleased to now be a part of this broad collaboration that will help develop strategies to improve reliability and reduce losses on our electric grid,” said Brookhaven Associate Lab Director for Global and Regional Solutions Gerald Stokes. “We look forward to sharing our research findings and hearing from others who are similarly engaged.”
Brookhaven National Laboratory joins a balanced membership of stakeholders that includes leaders from the business community, utilities, regulators and advocacy groups. SGCC activities include funding independent research on consumer smart grid issues, providing forums for members to share and self-educate and collaborating to develop industry best practices.
One of ten national laboratories overseen and primarily funded by the Office of Science of the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), Brookhaven National Laboratory conducts research in the physical, biomedical, and environmental sciences, as well as in energy technologies and national security. Smart Grid Consumer Collaborative is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit with the mission of accelerating the adoption of a smart grid that is consumer-safe, consumer-friendly and consumer-approved. Membership is open to all consumer and environmental advocates, technology vendors, research laboratories and electric utilities for collaboration in research, best practices and consumer education.
