London - 12 Jul 2012: IBM (NYSE: IBM) today announced that Suffolk Life, one of the U.K.’s leading providers and administrators of specialist pensions, has decreased energy consumption while meeting increased customer demand after adopting IBM's Smarter Computing approach to IT several months ago. In the four weeks following completion of the project in April, overall power consumption at Suffolk Life had reduced by 37 percent, delivering projected savings of approximately £30k per year.
Suffolk Life is one of the U.K.’s leading providers and administrators of Self Invested Personal Pensions (SIPPs), administering more than 16,000 self-invested plans with gross assets in excess of £4.5 billion. IBM's Smarter Computing approach to IT is designed to provide customers greater system efficiencies and performance, while lowering costs, through the use of optimized systems. In the case of Suffolk Life, the company is now able to quickly increase infrastructure based on consumer and business demand while lowering energy consumption.   
IBM upgraded and consolidated the Suffolk Life IT server and storage infrastructure to deliver increased flexibility in handling and accessing pension data across the business while significantly decreasing their carbon footprint and energy costs. The improvements also allow for easy expansion as their customer database grows.  
“We are continually looking to find new ways of improving our business processes and infrastructure in order to deliver top class propositions and services for our customers,” said Ian Long, Head of Information Technology for Suffolk Life. “This project has been a resounding success for Suffolk Life. IBM delivered an updated infrastructure ahead of schedule that enabled us to significantly reduce our power consumption and associated running costs.”  
IBM migrated 84 percent of the existing physical environment to a new virtualized server and storage environment, switching from HP servers to energy efficient IBM System x3650 M3 servers. As a result, Suffolk Life has consolidated the physical servers from 66 boxes to only six across two sites, plus the additional nine IBM hosts providing the new virtual environment. As well as providing a new server and storage infrastructure, the project included the migration of 60 business applications to the new environment.  
“IBM has been able to apply our services expertise to provide Suffolk Life the IT flexibility needed to keep up with increased customer demand and provide the foundation of flexibility, efficiency and capacity to significantly grow the business into the future,” said Andrew Brierley, Vice President of Integrated Technology Services, IBM U.K. & Ireland.  
As a result of the project, data indicates that overall power consumption at Suffolk Life has reduced by approximately 37 percent since the implementation of the new infrastructure with a potential cost saving per year of up to £30k. The power reduction seen during the first 4 weeks of running the new environment equates to almost 13 tons of C02 (12,888kg).  
The System x3650 server is part of IBM’s Smarter Computing initiative. Through cloud technologies and systems optimized for their specific workload, IBM is helping organisations better access, organize, and utilize their own large amounts of data.

Superior Streets: City of Superior, Neb., reduces energy costs by nearly 70 percent with move to GE LED street lighting

SUPERIOR, Neb. — May 9, 2012 — (NYSE:GE) — Like most municipalities, the City of Superior was looking for ways to save scarce tax dollars and keep utility rates down. The solution—a citywide streetlight replacement project, moving from high-pressure sodium lights to GE’s energy-efficient LED streetlights, ultimately reducing the city’s electricity costs by more than $20,000 annually.
The high-pressure sodium lights had lit Superior’s city streets and parks for many years, but the city wanted to reduce electricity costs while maintaining or improving light quality. Superior received 13 bids and accompanying light samples from the top four candidates. The city performed side-by-side testing of each light sample for two weeks before measuring light output and energy usage, balanced with pricing. The GE Evolve™ LED Medium Roadway fixture emerged as the clear winner. Superior had applied for and received an Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant to cover part of the cost of the lighting upgrade. The grant program is a federal initiative to help fund energy efficiency and conservation programs across the country.
In 2009, Superior spent $30,260 on electricity for streetlights. The city expects the more than 600 LED fixtures installed will reduce electricity costs to approximately $9,300 annually, with the project paying for itself in just seven years. In addition to energy savings, the city will realize reduced maintenance costs, with the GE LED system expected to provide 11 years of service, based on a 50,000-hour life and 12 hours of operation per day.
Larry Brittenham, utility manager for Superior, acknowledges the monetary payback is important, but says the real payback is in reducing the city’s carbon footprint.
“We are saving 156 tons of CO2 per year from just the electrical generation of our streetlights, which doesn’t include the reduced impact from the transportation and manufacturing of parts, or installation every few years with our old lighting. Just imagine what larger cities could save in greenhouse gasses with GE’s LED systems,” says Brittenham. “For the combination of light output and cost, no other LED manufacturers came close to the GE lights.”
GE Evolve LED Roadway fixtures improve visibility on Superior’s roads with better horizontal and vertical lighting uniformity, reduced glare and light pollution, and less light trespass. As part of a major initiative for the state of Nebraska to move to green technology, Superior and five other Nebraska cities are retrofitting various mercury vapor and high-pressure sodium streetlights with GE LED systems.
“We’re seeing a rapid adoption of LED systems for roadways. In fact, 29 states have already installed or are evaluating GE’s Evolve™ LED fixture as a replacement for less-efficient lighting sources. This replacement project will improve visibility for Nebraska drivers, which can create a brighter environment. It will also reduce maintenance costs and lower energy consumption,” says Tim Miller, GE global product manager, outdoor lighting fixture platforms.

EAST CLEVELAND, Ohio — May 9, 2012 — (NYSE:GE) — Las Vegas is best known for the bright lights of ‘The Strip’; but thanks to new LED fixtures from GE Lighting, the city’s surrounding streets are starting to take on a shine of their own. Far from a gamble, an investment in new brighter streetlights will soon save The Entertainment Capital of the World nearly $1.7 million in annual energy costs by reducing electricity use by more than 20 million kilowatt hours (kWhs).
Lowering expenses with LEDsNearly 6,600 GE Evolve™ LED Roadway fixtures have already replaced mercury vapor and high-pressure sodium (HPS) lights on arterial streets and residential thoroughfares throughout Las Vegas. As a result, the city will consume approximately 2.2 million fewer kWhs this year, equating to $175,000 in energy savings.
This spring, Las Vegas will launch the second phase of its street lightingupdate, installing 35,000 additional Evolve LED Roadway fixtures over the next 12 months. Stage-two utility savings alone will exceed $1.5 million a year by diminishing electricity use by more than 18 million kWhs.
Upon project completion, more than 80 percent of Las Vegas’ 50,000 streetlights will be powered by GE fixtures. And while previous streetlights lasted about four years on average, GE’s new Evolve Roadway LEDs have a longer life estimated at more than 11 years based on 12 hours use per day—significantly extending the time between maintenance cycles. The city calculates this will yield an additional $1 million cost benefit, bringing combined annual energy and maintenance savings to $2.7 million. The bright white light produced by the LED light source further improves visibility on streets.
"Las Vegas has a strong commitment to the environment, and we are recognized internationally for our green initiatives," says Las Vegas City Manager Elizabeth N. Fretwell. "People who don't live in Southern Nevada may not think of Las Vegas when they talk about the environment and energy efficiency, but the truth is our city is a leader in these areas."
Making a local bidThe Las Vegas lighting project was opened to public bid in late 2010 and allowed for all types of illumination technologies. Design Concepts, Inc. (DCI), GE Lighting’s authorized Las Vegas representative agency, met with city officials to tout the advantages of an LED solution. Among many different competitors and technology offerings, GE was selected as one of five finalists to participate in an extended trial that concluded in March 2011.
“This was a long and rigorous testing and qualifying process,” explains Bob King, president and CEO of DCI. “The city conducted a thorough study in cooperation with a local engineering consulting firm familiar with the city’s roadway lighting requirements as set forth by the Regional Transportation Commission (RTC) of Southern Nevada. Ultimately, the decision fell to a team of lighting experts who meticulously analyzed performance, construction, engineered design characteristics, aesthetics and long-term value.”
In April 2011, GE was awarded the contract for the first 6,600 fixtures. In early 2012, the city proceeded with phase two of the lighting update with an additional 35,000 fixtures. The complete project represents the largest roadway lighting contract in GE Lighting’s history.
“Our products are designed to compete from an overall performance perspective,” explains Pete Porte, western regional manager for GE Lighting. “From light levels to street size dimensions to pole heights, the specification put forth by the RTC of Southern Nevada was based on meeting myriad criteria. We hit all the marks with an efficient fixture that yields up to a 60 percent reduction in energy consumption compared to standard high-intensity discharge (HID) systems.”
DCI coordinated LED fixture fulfillment through local distributor Crescent Electric Supply Company and electrical contractor TransCore to provide installation services for the majority of Las Vegas’ new streetlights.
GE and DCI further engaged the city’s maintenance and energy management teams in discussions that produced an NV Energy utility rebate, while Crescent Electric coordinated a recycling program for Las Vegas’ old HPS fixtures that will provide the city a direct credit that will be applied to the purchase of the new LED lights.
An environmental payoutBy transitioning to more than 41,000 GE Evolve LED Roadway fixtures over the next year, Las Vegas will remove more than 12,000 metric tons of carbon dioxide (CO2) from its atmosphere annually. This is equivalent to eliminating the CO2 emissions of more than 2,300 passenger cars or to planting more than 3,200 acres of trees.*
Evolve LED Roadway fixtures are designed to meet recommended luminance and illuminance requirements for local and major highway and street classifications. Advanced reflective optic technology effectively directs light where it’s needed, improves horizontal and vertical uniformity and reduces glare. A refined thermal management system incorporates a robust heat sink directly in the fixture to ensure maximum heat transfer for long LED life. These energy-efficient fixtures can also be paired with programmable dimming options for even greater control and savings.

HUNTSVILLE, AL — May 8, 2012— GE Intelligent Platforms today announced a new rugged single board computer (SBC) based on the latest 3rd Generation Intel® Core™ quad core processor technology. The SBC325 brings substantially increased processing performance to customers using the 3U VPX form factor to develop and deploy demanding industrial and mil/aero applications such as command/control, ISR (intelligence, surveillance, reconnaissance), radar/sonar and signal processing.

    MUNICH, GERMANY—May 8, 2012—GE (NYSE: GE) today announced atIFAT Entsorga 2012 that ASI Messina of Italy is the first customer in Europe for its high-performance LEAPmbr* membrane bioreactor (MBR) wastewater-treatment technology, which helps address water quality while reducing energy costs and increasing productivity. GE sold the technology to Costruzioni Dondi S.p.A., the Italian engineering, procurement and construction company that won the international public open tender for ASI Messina‘s wastewater plant upgrade.

    “The ASI Messina plant will treat wastewater generated by two municipalities and by local industrial sites associated to the ASI Messina Consortium. By using GE’s LEAPmbr technology, ASI Messina will be able to reach the high effluent qualities imposed by the local authority and will have the possibilities to reuse the treated wastewater for industrial needs,” said Alessandro Rondina, technical director of Costruzioni Dondi S.p.A.

    GE’s LEAPmbr technology helps owners of municipal, industrial and residential water/wastewater treatment facilities around the world address their pressing water quality issues, while also reducing energy costs and increasing overall productivity of the treatment system. The Italian region is facing a number of issues related to poor wastewater management, either due to lacking infrastructure or existing plants that are obsolete and not in compliance with European Union water directives.

    When applied to the ASI Messina wastewater treatment plant, GE’s LEAPmbr ultrafiltration technology will control pollution and will help protect the environment through water reuse, coast preservation and low energy consumption. According to Alberto Dondi, CEO of Costruzioni Dondi S.p.A., “The ability of GE’s technology to reach high treatment levels in a very confined space while providing the lowest energy consumption among all advanced technologies today were key reasons that led to us selecting GE for this important project.”

    The ASI Messina plant is an upgrade of an existing installation, located in Giammoro, approximately 35 kilometers from the city of Messina, the third largest city on the island of Sicily. The municipal wastewater generated by municipalities and industrial activities in the area will be treated biologically through GE’s advanced ultrafiltration technology, which results in high-treatment efficiency and the best effluent quality of any advanced technologies available today. The plant is located on the sea coast and will be discharging into the Mediterranean Sea and will serve as a high-quality water source for non-potable use by the industrial activities served by A.S.I. Messina. The new plant, once completed, will be able to treat a yearly average flow of 21 million liters per day (MLD), or 21,000 m3/d, with daily peaks up to 40,000 m3/d, which is equivalent to the daily water use of roughly 125,000 people.

    “Governments and municipalities are looking into ways to reuse wastewater for not-potable purposes, particularly in places afflicted by droughts, like Southern Italy,” said Heiner Markhoff, president and CEO—water and process technologies for GE Power & Water. “Our LEAPmbr technology offers unique and advanced features to solve many of these issues through ultrafiltration membranes that are able to enhance the treatment capacity three-fold when compared to conventional technologies, while at the same time reaching high effluent standards at the lowest possible running costs.”

    The result of a four-year development effort, GE’s LEAPmbr system offers the lowest lifecycle costs available from any MBR technology, while also being cost-competitive with conventional treatment. These cost savings, along with operational simplicity and a compact footprint, derive from innovations to the popular GE ZeeWeed* 500 MBR product line—the most widely-used, reinforced, hollow-fiber ultrafiltration technologies available. The cost and efficiency savings of GE’s LEAPmbr system compared to existing GE MBR technologies include:
    • A minimum 30 percent reduction in energy costs.
    • A 15 percent improvement in productivity (greater water-treatment capacity).
    • A 50 percent reduction in membrane aeration equipment and controls, leading to a simpler design with lower construction, installation and maintenance costs.
    • A 20 percent reduction in physical footprint leading to further reduced construction and installation costs as well as lower ongoing consumption of cleaning chemicals.
    Under the terms of the ASI Messina wastewater treatment plant project, GE provided Costruzioni Dondi S.p.A. the total scope of the LEAPmbr filtration unit, which also includes a three-year service contract. GE’s equipment will be shipped in phases beginning in September 2012. Commercial operation is expected by the second quarter of 2013.

    This installation in Italy will be the next step in a successful rollout for GE’s LEAPmbr technology. In October of 2011, GE announced the results of an ongoing, nearly two-year demonstration project in Marco Island, Fla., which proved the capability of LEAPmbr technology to reduce energy costs and increase productivity.

    ATLANTA, GA.—May 7, 2012—Today at AISTech 2012—one of the largest conferences of the year for the iron and steel industry—GE (NYSE: GE) showcased the waste-to-value success story of China’s Wuhan Iron & Steel (Group) Company (WISCO). Wuhan’s challenge began shortly after the Chinese government passed stringent legislation to reduce the emissions of steel mill operations.
    Collaborating with WISCO, GE was able to turn their challenge into a strategic opportunity by devising an advanced technology solution that captures waste gases from the blast furnace and converts them into usable energy. Sequestering and burning the gases reduces the emissions from the steel-making process, improves reliability and provides a zero-cost fuel source for generating the electricity necessary to operate the mill. In a rapidly growing region bursting with industrial opportunity, Wuhan’s goal is to produce more products while simultaneously lowering its power generation costs and reducing greenhouse gases. Thus far, the waste-to-value solution has been so successful that WISCO has saved $32 million in annual operational savings and reduced CO2 emissions by 2 million tons per year—equal to removing more than 391,000 cars off the road.
    The World Steel Association reports that 1.3 billion tons of steel were produced in 2007, and production levels are expected to double by 2050 to meet the growing demand for steel around the world. Since energy constitutes a significant portion of the cost of steel production—from 20 to 40 percent in some countries—improvements in energy efficiency result in reduced production costs and in turn, improved competitiveness.
    During this week’s AISTech steel conference at Atlanta’s Georgia World Congress Center, GE Metals Solutions is showcasing this waste-to-value and other solutions including:
    • Power efficiency improvements to save more than 10 percent of facility costs.
    • Water consumption solutions with 20 to 40 percent usage reduction and 25 to 40 percent in cost-out savings.

    MUNICH, GERMANY—May 7, 2012—Expanding its portfolio of aeration blowers for the wastewater treatment and process industries, GE (NYSE: GE) is introducing the Roots Turbo Blower at IFAT 2012, the International Trade Fair for Environment, Wastewater and Waste Disposal being held in Munich May 7-11.

    The cost-effective, low-maintenance Roots Turbo Blower offers an efficient aeration solution for a wastewater treatment plant. For a typical aerobic digestion wastewater treatment plant, the aeration blower accounts for 50-60 percent of the total electricity used by the facility. Improving the process by a few percentage points can have a significant impact on the plant’s monthly electric utility bill and the Roots Turbo Blower provides that process improvement.

    “The Roots Turbo Blower is the newest member of a product line that has been providing aeration blowers since 1929,” said Jim Drees, product line leader, roots blowers and compressors, GE Measurement & Control. “The new blower is available in units ranging from 300 kilowatts down to 22.5 kilowatts and offers the next generation of oil-free bearing technology. We believe its Bump Type airfoil bearing delivers better performance than earlier technology.”

    Aeration equipment, including turbo blowers, is used in biological oxygen demand (BOD) removal, nitrification and aerobic digestion processes within the wastewater treatment plant. In the aeration basins, where the BOD removal and nitrification process occur, bacteria feed on the waste that is coming into the plant. These bacteria are kept alive and their biological activity maintained at an optimal level by aerating or adding oxygen to the process. The simplest and most cost-effective way to provide the oxygen to the bacteria is to compress atmospheric air and distribute it into the aeration basins through fine bubble diffusers, using turbo blowers to force the air through the piping.

    “This process of capturing air and forcing it into the aeration system requires electricity, or some form of power, and as energy costs have increased, plants are seeking more efficient ways of delivering this air,” noted Drees. “Our Roots Turbo Blower was developed to address with this objective in mind.”

    PLAINVILLE, Conn. — March 19, 2012 — GE Energy’s (NYSE: GE) Industrial Solutions business has joined the new Industrial Energy Efficiency Coalition (IEEC) as a founding member. The IEEC is a unique alliance of industrial controls and automation suppliers advocating for new federal policies that encourage manufacturers to implement energy efficiency strategies to boost their productivity and sustainability.
    With U.S. industries consuming one third of the country’s energy, the industrial sector has a significant opportunity to achieve substantial energy savings of 25 to 30 percent over the next 25 years by installing new controls and automation technologies. However, current government policies and investments are failing to adequately address these potential energy saving opportunities.
    The IEEC was established to leverage its members’ collective expertise in controls and automation to promote processes, best practices, technologies and standards to help ensure the most efficient use of electrical energy by the U.S. industrial sector.
